چکیده

Consider a dynamical system given by a planar differential equation, which exhibits an unstable periodic orbit surrounding a stable periodic orbit. It is known that under random perturbations, the distribution of locations where the system’s first exit from the interior of the unstable orbit occurs, typically displays the phenomenon of cycling: The distribution of first-exit locations is translated along the unstable periodic orbit proportionally to the logarithm of the noise intensity as the noise intensity goes to zero. We show that for a large class of such systems, the cycling profile is given, up to a model-dependent change of coordinates, by a universal function given by a periodicised Gumbel distribution. Our techniques combine action-functional or largedeviation results with properties of random Poincaré maps described by continuousspace discrete-time Markov chains. Date. August 13, 2012. On the noise-induced passage through an unstable periodic orbit I: Two-level model

We consider the problem of stochastic exit from a planar domain, whose boundary is an unstable periodic orbit, and which contains a stable periodic orbit. This problem arises when investigating the distribution of noise-induced phase slips between synchronized oscillators, or when studying stochastic resonance far from the adiabatic limit. We introduce a simple, piecewise linear model equation,...

Chaos in temporarily destabilized regular systems with the slow passage effect

We provide evidences for chaotic behaviour in temporarily destabilized regular systems. In particular, we focus on time-continuous systems with the slow passage effect. The extreme sensitivity of the slow passage phase enables the existence of long chaotic transients induced by random pulsatile perturbations, thereby evoking chaotic behaviour in an initially regular system. We confirm the chaot...

Approximating Chaotic Time Series through Unstable Periodic Orbits

There are many noise reduction methods for chaotic signals, but most only work over a limited signal to noise range. If chaotic signals are to be used for communications, noise reduction techniques which can handle larger amounts of noise (or deterministic noise) are needed. I describe here a method of approximating a chaotic signal by constructing possible sequences based on unstable periodic ...

Chaotic mixing in noisy Hamiltonian systems

This paper summarises an investigation of the effects of low amplitude noise and periodic driving on phase space transport in three-dimensional Hamiltonian systems, a problem directly applicable to systems like galaxies, where such perturbations reflect internal irregularities and/or a surrounding environment. A new diagnostic tool is exploited to quantify the extent to which, over long times, ...
